BIOS 40325 - Plant Biochemistry and Biofuels: The Power for Life
This course for juniors, seniors and graduate students is structured around the physics, chemistry, and biochemistry of photoautotrophs, the organisms that support almost all of the life on earth. In this course we will examine three core topics to prepare you for your own investigations of the use of biomass for energy generation. The course will have some lecture-style content, but interaction with each other and the professor will be necessary. The interactive class format will require preparation before class. The basic resource materials are the two textbooks, online content and the primary literature. A basic knowledge of chemistry, physics and organic chemistry is required. Engineering, chemistry and biochemistry majors are welcome. The conceptual goals of this course are an enduring understanding of 1) the basic energy transformation processes and structural complexity of photoautotrophs, 2) the biochemical and cultural impact of agriculture and3) the sources of biofuels and the costs of their use. Added benefits are an appreciation of the dazzling biochemical complexity and capability of plants, and (possibly) ideas for sustainable energy generation systems of the future.
